Lunar Planting Guide

The Moon and Your Garden

For centuries, gardeners and farmers have planted by the moon. The idea is simple: just as the moon governs the tides, its gravitational pull influences the movement of moisture in soil and sap in plants. While modern science has not fully confirmed every aspect of lunar gardening, many growers find that syncing their plant care with the moon cycle brings a satisfying rhythm and mindfulness to the practice.

The Four Phases

New Moon (Days 1–7)

This is a time of new beginnings. Sap is drawn upward, making it an excellent window for sowing seeds and repotting plants that produce above-ground growth. Start herb seeds, leafy greens, and flowering annuals during this phase. For houseplants, this is a great time to pot up new cuttings.

Waxing Moon (Days 8–14)

Energy continues to rise. The increasing moonlight is thought to encourage strong leaf and stem growth. This is the ideal phase for feeding your houseplants, transplanting into larger pots, and taking stem cuttings for propagation. Plants potted during the waxing moon often establish roots quickly.

Full Moon (Days 15–21)

The peak of lunar energy. Moisture levels in the soil are at their highest, and the plant world is at its most vibrant. This phase is best for harvesting herbs and flowers — their essential oils are believed to be most concentrated now. It is also a wonderful time to cleanse and charge crystals placed among your plants.

Waning Moon (Days 22–28)

Energy descends toward the roots. This is the phase for pruning, weeding, and root work. Trim back leggy growth, remove dead foliage, and divide root-bound plants. Rest and maintenance are the themes here — let your plants consolidate before the cycle begins again.

Practical Tips for Indoor Gardeners

  • Keep a moon journal: Note the phase when you water, feed, repot, or propagate. Over a few months you may notice patterns in how your plants respond.
  • Full moon watering ritual: Give your plants a thorough soak on or near the full moon. Pair it with a moment of gratitude for the greenery in your life.
  • New moon intention setting: As the moon resets, so can you. Choose one plant to focus on for the coming cycle — perhaps one that needs extra attention or a fresh pot.

Does It Really Work?

Lunar gardening is part science, part tradition, and part intuition. Even if the gravitational effects on a small pot of soil are negligible, the practice encourages you to slow down, observe your plants regularly, and care for them in a consistent rhythm. That attentiveness alone produces healthier, happier plants — and a calmer gardener too.
